Stevie and her new human sister.
UPDATE 7/26/21: Thanks to the generosity of donors, Stevie's medical expenses have been covered in full and she was adopted into a loving family! She received injections to break up the worms in her heart. Three months after her last injection, she was re-tested for heartworm. Stevie tested negative for heartworm!
Stevie was adopted and the family shared that she has fit in seamlessly!
Below is Stevie's "Before" story, we are thankful that she made a full recovery and has the forever home she deserves!
Stevie and her six puppies were surrendered after being found in dangerous living conditions.
A Humane Agent found the little family living outside in 90-degree heat. Stevie was lethargic, dehydrated, and underweight. She was doing her best to care for her 6 babies but needed immediate attention. After Stevie’s health was assessed, it was determined that she was also heartworm positive.
Due to our flourishing foster program, Stevie and her puppies were transferred to Lake Humane Society. A foster family took in Stevie and helped raise her puppies. Because she was nursing, Stevie was unable to immediately start heartworm treatment. She was a wonderful mama and all of her puppies were adopted into loving homes. Now that Stevie's babies are taken care of, she can receive medical care for her heartworm. Without proper treatment, this diagnosis is likely fatal.
Stevie received two painful injections this week, which will slowly break down the worms in her heart. While her body fights this disease, she needs 6-8 weeks of crate rest. Her foster family reports that this gentle girl is responding well to the injections. Stevie is only 2 years old and still has so much life to live. After spending her whole life on a chain, Stevie's sweet and silly personality is starting to shine through. She deserves a second chance at life.
Stevie's treatment will cost upwards of $1,500.
This estimate includes pre-treatment medications, heartworm injections, and additional examinations/lab work to monitor her recovery. In addition to her extensive medical care, LHS will spay and microchip Stevie, as well as provide her with preventatives and initial vaccines.
All donations made to this fundraising page will be designated to our Angel Fund, and 100% of your gift will go toward Stevie and her lifesaving care. Once she has fully recovered, any excess funds will remain in our Angel Fund and will be used to help the next animal in need of extensive or emergency medical care.
