Penny enjoys being tucked into bed in her forever home.
UPDATE 7/26/21: Thanks to the generosity of donors, Penny's medical expenses were covered in full and she was adopted into a loving home! Penny was placed in a foster home for her recovery process and after many months, they decided to officially adopt her. Penny now has two dog siblings and is enjoying her forever home.
Her family shared, "When I initially saw the Facebook posts that were circulating about the little pitty girl, I couldn't stop thinking about her. I knew that we had to foster Penny. She was a little wary of us at first but she immediately bonded with our male dog, Chavo. From him, she learned what it was like to be a part of a family. We are amazed that after all she's been through, she is still trusting towards people and so loving! She is the most forgiving, sweetest dog!"
Below is Penny's "Before" story, we are thankful that she made a full recovery and now has the loving home she deserves!
Recently, there was a video shared on social media that exposed a Pit Bull Terrier mix (now named Penny) in great distress. She was chained up at a Lake County residence in the heat and sun without water, shade or food. Penny struggled to stand up and her breathing was extremely labored. Lake Humane Society conducted a full investigation into the incident. Penny was impounded by LHS and ultimately surrendered through the court system. Penny is weak, underweight and doing her best to adjust to her new surroundings.
Upon further examination, it was determined that Penny is suffering from heat stroke, which has resulted in extreme dehydration. Lab work revealed kidney and liver problems - medical staff believe this is the result of deadly heat exposure. In a few weeks, Penny’s lab work will be checked to re-evaluate her condition and determine the cause. On top of everything, yesterday, Penny's back legs gave out and she collapsed. She needs radiographs, so medical staff can figure out the best course of treatment.
Penny is only around 1 year old and still has so much life to live. We already know she loves belly rubs and spending time with people who care. With your help, LHS can make sure this sweet girl gets the treatment she needs. Currently, Penny is receiving antibiotics, a special kidney diet and liver medications. Staff has made sure she is resting comfortably and everyone is lavishing her with food and love.
UPDATE 9/23/2020: Penny is adjusting well to her new life and is enjoying her time in a loving foster home. Her bloodwork was re-checked and her organ functioning is back to normal. This is the news we were hoping for!
After the consult with the orthopedic surgeon, it was decided that she will need surgery on her luxating patella in about 2 weeks. Before surgery, she is getting fitted for leg braces that will help stabilize her before and after surgery. After Penny's surgery, she will have a 2-week follow-up and a 6-week follow-up with the Orthopedic Surgeon. At the 6-week follow-up, she will have additional x-rays taken to determine how she has healed.
Due to the severity of her condition, Penny's care could cost upwards of $2,000.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, Penny's expenses have been covered in full!
This estimate includes medications, special kidney food, radiographs, additional examinations/lab work and treatment to assist in her recovery. If her bloodwork remains high, further testing (ultrasound/ x-rays) and medical care would be needed. In addition to her extensive medical care, LHS will spay and microchip Penny, as well as provide her with preventatives and initial vaccines.
All donations made to this fundraising page will be designated to our Angel Fund, and 100% of your gift will go toward Penny and her lifesaving care. Once she has fully recovered, any excess funds will remain in our Angel Fund and will be used to help the next animal in need of extensive or emergency medical care.
We can't give these loving pets a second chance without you! Please donate today and save lives.
