UPDATE 1/25/22: After weighing out all options with the surgeon, it was determined that it's in Penelope's best interest to undergo two separate procedures. The first is schedule to happen January 26th, where they will operate on polyps in the first ear and in her nasal passage. She will stay the night at the emergency hospital following surgery to ensure she recovers properly. The plan is to operate on the second ear about 2 weeks later. Of course, the need for two surgeries has now increased the cost of Penelope's overall care, bringing it up to an estimated $7,500-8,200. The decision for two separate surgeries was made in Penelope's best interest as the inflammation and recovery to remove all polyps at once is too risky. We thank you all so very much for your support. We could not give Penelope this second chance at life without you. She has a road to recovery, but once this is behind her she has her whole life ahead of her!

Penelope was surrendered to LHS, along with several other cats, because their owner could no longer care for them. Since her arrival, this sweet kitty has been suffering from a series of upper respiratory infections. 

It was discovered that Penelope is suffering from an uncommon medical condition - polyps. A polyp is a fleshy growth that can cause problems in cats. Penelope currently has polyps larger than the size of tic-tacs in her left ear, nasal passage and throat. These polyps are causing the chronic infections and treatment is critical for this kitty to live a healthy life.

As these masses continue to grow, Penelope may develop breathing difficulties and trouble swallowing. They have already begun to fill up her ear and nasal passages. LHS's veterinarian, Dr. Wolfgang, determined that these polyps require surgical removal. Lake Humane Society does not have the necessary medical equipment, so Penelope will need to receive treatment at a specialty clinic. 

Despite her ailments, Penelope is full of life, love and playful antics. She is only 6 months old and with your help, will have a long and happy life ahead of her!

This estimate includes surgery and rehab at a specialty clinic and additional examinations/lab work to monitor her recovery. In addition to her extensive medical care, LHS has spayed and microchipped Penelope, as well as provided her with preventatives and initial vaccines.
