Layla and her new mom!
UPDATE 7/6/21: Thanks to the generosity of donors, Layla's medical treatment has been payed for in full and this sweet dog has made a full recovery. Layla received injections to break up the worms in her heart. She was adopted during her treatment and was able to recover in a loving home.
3 months following the last injection, she was brought to Lake Humane Society to test for heartworm. Layla is officially heartworm negative!
Her family shared, "Layla is such a loveable puppy and is living her best life. She now sleeps with the kids and knows when it is bed time. She loves to play tug of war with stuffed animals. She still loves car rides and knows when it is time to pick up the kids from school!"
Below is Layla's "Before" story, this gentle dog has come a long way and we're thankful she has made a full recovery.
After investigating complaints of animal neglect, Layla was rescued by our Humane Agent and brought to Lake Humane Society.
This sweet pup arrived extremely underweight, with her ribs and spine starkly visible. Initial testing discovered that Layla was also heartworm positive. Lake Humane Society’s veterinarian, Dr. Wolfgang, reported hearing muffled heart sounds and a murmur, which is likely caused by the worms clogging up her heart.
Without treatment, this diagnosis is likely fatal.
Layla was immediately started on a month of anti-parasitic medication and antibiotics. She was not only deprived of food, but the internal parasites steal nutrients as well. This gentle lady is enjoying a special high-calorie diet to increase her weight. Following this pre-treatment, Layla will receive injections to slowly break down the worms in her heart. While her body fights the disease, she will need 6-8 weeks of crate rest.
Layla has captivated the volunteers and staff at LHS with her infectious smile and sweet personality. Despite her neglectful past, this 5-year-old pup only has love to give.
Supporting Layla's Angel Fund today will help give her the second chance she deserves!
Layla's treatment costed upwards of $1500.
Thanks to her donors, it has been covered it full!
This estimate includes pre-treatment medications, heartworm injections, and additional examinations/lab work to monitor her recovery. In addition to her extensive medical care, LHS will spay and microchip Layla, as well as provide her with preventatives and initial vaccines.
All donations made to this fundraising page will be designated to our Angel Fund, and 100% of your gift will go toward Layla and her lifesaving care. Once she has fully recovered, any excess funds will remain in our Angel Fund and will be used to help the next animal in need of extensive or emergency medical care.
